Characters can paint on constructions, furniture, and storage. They can write on writing surfaces. Characters must have a paintbrush equipped to paint, but they do not need any paint in their inventory.
When painting you may choose to write in letters or to make a piece of pixel art.

If you do not have any paint equipped, you will write in grey, with what is presumed to be an improvised paint. If you have paint equipped, you will write in that colour instead. If you have more than one paint equipped, you can choose from the different colours you have.
Paint is created at a Dyer's workshop and uses plant or animal parts found throughout the world. Certain paint colours are much more commonly found than others.
Painted constructions, tiles, and furniture appear slightly tinted in the colour of the painted work.
One difference between painting and writing is how the finished work is viewed. Paintings are viewed by looking at items with l. Writings are viewed by pressing \ in the inventory screen while standing on or holding the item.
Whereas a painting will always be a maximum of 132 characters or 22 x 11 pixels, a writing surface's size will vary based on the materials used and whether you're writing or drawing. A writing surface's drawing surface will always be 82 x 22 pixels. It's writing surface will be somewhere between 2000 and 10,000 characters. Writing surfaces can also be combined into books to make reading easier.
Writing surfaces have to be held to be written on. If you want to ensure something is not written over by other players, it is best to write on books or write on objects they cannot directly access. It is not a crime to write on a writing surface, no matter who created it or last wrote on it.
Painting on things is considered a crime. If the item you are painting is in a panel that is protected by an organisation, you will be considered a criminal.
